The rest of the morning they spent back in bed where Elijah took great pains to relieve Seth more than once. They ate lunch, cooked by Elijah, on the porch and then kissed passionately before Seth left to see Hope. Elijah took the truck back to Deacon & Son’s office to sort through his daddy’s paper work and make sure the crews were all back on track with the ongoing contracts and certifications for completed jobs.

The hours ticked away relentlessly slow, and Seth and Hope were never far from his mind as he filed, sorted and cursed. Elijah had worked for his father all of his life, and now he was gone. Nothing felt the same. As Elijah looked around the small wood paneled office, he felt empty, as though all the life in him had been sucked dry. There’s nothing here for you Elijah, it’s time to move on.

A knock at the door broke the seal on Elijah’s spiraling mood. He was glad when Bubba took a seat opposite him and asked to talk. Bubba’s face told the story of a man grieving the loss of his friend and wanting something, anything to remember him by. He’d been with Elijah’s father since the day that very first contract rolled through the doors and knew everything there was to know about construction and how to deal with the customers. His heart beat for the work he did.

As the evening drew on, the flickering of an idea that had been born the night before burned brighter than a neon sign. A deal struck on the handshake of two men sealed the fate of Hope and Elijah’s future. He just hoped Seth would see it the same way. He couldn’t do this anymore, not in Alabama. There was only one thing Elijah could do to guarantee a future happiness with the two people he loved most in the world. Now, all he had to do was reach out to his contacts in the north and hope like hell they’d see him for what he was worth.
